On Wednesday, May 11, 2011, President Obama nominated Richard G. Andrews to fill the vacancy in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. Andrews served in several capacities in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware, including as chief of the criminal division, first assistant U.S. attorney and acting U.S. attorney. Since 2007, Andrews has served as state prosecutor in the Delaware Department of Justice in charge of the department’s criminal division.

If confirmed, Andrews will fill the vacant position from which cases have been assigned to several appointed judges from the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the District of New Jersey. In addition to the Andrews announcement, the Court has selected Christopher J. Burke, currently an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Delaware, to serve as the second magistrate judge.  With the confirmation of Andrews and Burke, the Court will be fully staffed for the first time since 2006.
