Recently, Governor John Carney signed Senate Bill No. 170 and House Bill No. 483. SB 170, in conjunction with HB 483, requires Delaware employers to raise the minimum wage over the next two years from $8.25 an hour to $9.25 an hour with the following schedule:

  • $8.75 an hour by January 1, 2019
  • $9.25 an hour (an additional $0.50) by October 1, 2019

SB 170 also provides that if the federal minimum wage surpasses Delaware’s new provisions, employers must meet the new federal wage.

HB 483 creates an alternative wage for training during the first 90 days of employment and for teens under 18 years old. As of January 1, 2019, the training and youth wage is $8.25, $0.50 less than the new minimum wage of $8.75. Following any additional increases of the minimum wage, the training and youth wage must be no less than $0.50 less than the effective minimum wage.
